what the film does

johnny royal, an active master mason and member of knights templar and the scottish rite, documents his own seven-year journey through the appendant bodies of american freemasonry. the film shoots inside the grand lodge of california, the guthrie and nashville valleys of the scottish rite, and includes contributed footage from jamaica and england.

the structure is personal. royal is not an outside journalist trying to crack a secret. he is a member filming his own initiation through degrees that most masons never document on camera. the result is the first feature-length documentary shot from the insider perspective across the york rite and scottish rite bodies.

why this one

the film occupies an unusual position. it is neither conspiracy fodder nor a lodge promotional video. royal has enough insider access to film real ritual spaces, and enough cinematic ambition to shoot them with dramatic lighting and a polished score. the square magazine called it the most important documentary ever made on the subject, and while that is lodge press reviewing lodge film, the access alone makes it irreplaceable.

the crew elevates it above the usual faith-based or fringe-history documentary. sean beavan’s music supervision gives the ritual footage a weight that raw documentary coverage would not carry. the visual effects work by zach brinkerhoff (thor, x-men first class) adds production polish that is rare in this category.

what stays with me

the checkered floor. the candlelit altar. the moment when a documentarian stops being an observer and becomes a participant, and the film has to reckon with what that means for its claim to objectivity.
